City Encourages Residents to Participate in 2010 Census
Mayor Hooks is asking for each and every resident of the City of Weatherford to get involved and be counted in the 2010 Census.

Beginning this month, the U.S. Postal Service will be mailing forms for the 2010 Census in order to gather information from every household in Weatherford. The data collected from the 2010 Census will affect how more than $400 billion per year in Federal funding will be distributed to local governments, including the City of Weatherford, and helps determine locations for senior centers, hospitals, schools, community centers, new roads, and much more.

When households do not return their surveys, Census workers must attempt to reach each resident at their home, which increases the cost of the Census. The City of Weatherford encourages all residents to complete their 2010 Census forms. The questionnaire is only 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes. Every person living in your residence, both relatives and non-relatives, should be included on the Census form. Individuals should be counted in the residence where they live and sleep most of the time.

“We need the numbers to represent the new growth of our community as well as the diversity of Weatherford,” stated Mayor Hooks. “It is our responsibility to show the world what Weatherford is all about.”

Be on the lookout for your 2010 Census in the mail. Come May, Census workers will follow up with households that did not return their questionnaires, and in December the U.S. Census Bureau will deliver final data to the President.

Simple facts:

Households include:
*Babies, foster children, or roommates
*People living with you who have no other place to stay
*People living in your home most of the time, even if they have another place to stay

Households do not include:
*People who live or stay at another place most of the time
*Students living away from home while attending college or boarding school
*People in the military living somewhere else [Additional info...]

Time to Check Your Smoke Alarms
This weekend, March 13 and 14, we will all be setting our clocks to Daylight Saving Time. The time change is a good reminder to check your smoke alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 66 percent of home fire deaths that occurred between 2003-2006 were in homes without a working smoke alarm. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.

A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you’re awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm is constantly on alert, scanning the air for fire and smoke. Smoke alarms must be maintained! A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all, so test your smoke alarm monthly by pushing the “test” button, if it has one.

Smoke alarms are powered by either a battery or are hardwired into your home’s electrical system. Hardwired smoke alarms are usually equipped with a backup battery. If your smoke alarm is powered by battery, the battery needs to be replaced annually unless it is a long-life battery (check the owner’s manual). All batteries should be maintained and replaced in accordance with manufacturer’s guidance.

Choose an annual date, such as the time change, when you will remember to maintain your smoke alarm in tip top condition. Check the manufacturer’s expiration date on the label, replace the batteries if needed, and clean dust away from the slots so that smoke can enter freely. All smoke alarms, hard-wired and battery powered, should be replaced every ten years. These simple steps will help ensure that you and your family will have the best chance of surviving if fire should strike.

USFA has a fire safety campaign called Install. Inspect. Protect. which provides information about home smoke alarms and fire sprinklers. [Additional info...]

Trace Ridge Drive Temporarily Closed
There will be a temporary road closure at the main entrance for Trace Ridge Subdivision on Friday, March 12, 2010. The intersection of Trace Ridge Drive and Interstate Highway 20 frontage road will be closed to install a storm drainage system. The temporary closure will be from approximately 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Trace Ridge residents are encouraged to use Lockwood Lane and Causbie Drive as an alternate detour during road closures. Every effort will be made to re-open this intersection as soon as possible.

Also, beginning Monday, March 15, 2010, and lasting for approximately two weeks, the same intersection will be reduced to one lane. The east lane will be closed for reconstruction and the western lane will remain open for both inbound and outbound traffic for Trace Ridge Subdivision. Please keep in mind that inclement weather may delay work and extend the time the lane remains closed. Some construction noise may be noticeable.

We appreciate your patience while we work toward improved pavement conditions at this location. Please contact the Transportation and Public Works Department at (817)598-4245 for more information.
